‘Birthmark’ Movie Review

‘Birthmark’ Movie Rating: 3/5

Director Vikram Shreedharan’s Birthmark is a slow-paced drama that keeps you guessing about its genre, right from the time it starts, till the time it finishes.
The story, which begins as a slow romantic drama, begins to make you wonder whether it is going to turn into a crime thriller or a supernatural drama. Sadly, it turns into neither. Eventually, you find out that although it has some shades of crime, it actually ends up being more a philosophical drama that looks to educate audiences on childbirth and the natural birthing process.

The story revolves around a couple that is on the verge of embracing parenthood. Danny (Shabeer Kallarakkal) and his wife Jenny (Mirnaa) are about to turn parents as Jenny is on the verge of giving birth.

Danny, who has been serving in the army, chooses to take his wife to a remote village where they deliver babies in a natural way. When the couple arrive at the village, Jenny is made to attend some poojas and offered food prepared at the village. The place has no room for allopathic medicines nor does it have any modern medical equipment.

Jenny is instantly uncomfortable and wants to leave the place. But her husband is adamant that she will have to deliver her child there. So, a reluctant Jenny agrees and continues to stay there.
Initially, she trusts her husband and doubts the helpers at the birthing facility. But as time goes by, she realises that the problem lies not with the place where they have come to but with her husband. What is Danny hiding from Jenny? Birthmark gives you the answers.

Birthmark is such a slow-paced insipid tale that you get the feeling of watching a documentary on childbirth and good delivery practices. Occasionally, there are one or two developments that give you a glimmer of hope. However, these are few and far between. In addition to this, the film doesn’t show what happens to a few characters in the film.
Shabeer Kallarakkal, who delivered a mesmerising performance as Dancing Rose in Sarpetta Parambarai, seems out of sorts in this film as Danny. Mirnaa, who plays his wife Jenny, looks to bring some credibility to the plot, but even she can’t save it.

The only department that impresses you are the visuals of Udhay Thangavel. The film has some spectacular shots that are a treat to your eyes.
Birthmark has very little to offer in terms of engagement or entertainment. The whole film turns philosophical and makes you heave a sigh of relief when it actually ends.
