Irumbu Manithan revolves around Sundharam (Santhosh Prathap), a noble-minded person who runs a roadside eatery and lives with his three adopted children. SWhat he gives us is an overly melodramatic film that is as stretchy as the parottas that Sundharam makes. Given that this is a character-driven film, we expect a proper character arc for Sundharam, but what we get are wild jumps that don’t make sense. The character’s rise and fall happen almost instantly.
At least his initial rise is believable as Disney spends the entire first half charting it. But both his fall and his rise from it happen in a matter of a single cut. The older films at least had a song to show such transformations, but we get nothing of that sort here, leading to plausibility issues. Santhosh owns a hotel and is interested in cooking too. He adopts two kids and cares for them. Meanwhile, he meets a mentally challenged woman who is pregnant. After the delivery, she dies and Santhosh had to care for that kid too. Ganja Karuppu, who comes to the hotel to steal, gets a job there and assists Santhosh. Madhusoodhanan is a gangster and he tries to grab Santhosh’s hotel. Santhosh escapes from him. As the business picks up well, Santhosh launches a few more hotels. Archana loves him. But, he feels that Archana might separate him from the kids he avoids her and lives as a bachelor. Years pass by and the kids are grownups now. They take Santhosh’s affection for granted and grabs the properties from him and throw him out. Disney has chosen a good script penned by Joseph Baby. The screenplay is excellent. However, we could see the traces of some old films in certain scenes. The film proves how a man could be gentle at heart and at the same time, how he could become an iron-hearted one. The director means to say that self-confidence is the best partner and one should not depend on anyone. The music and the cinematography are quite decent.Irumbu Manithan is a good film to watch this weekend. The film is a lesson to society, how a person should be. Many times money overtakes affection and the director narrated it with valid scenes. Irumbu Manithan
