Nenjamundu Nermaiyundu Odu Raja Movie Review

Production: Sivakarthikeyan Productions Cast: Radha Ravi, Rio Raj, RJ Vigneshkanth Direction: Karthik Venugopalan Screenplay: Karthik Venugopalan Story: Karthik Venugopalan Music: Shabir Background score: Shabir Cinematography: U K Senthil Kumar Dialogues: Karthik Venugopalan

Nenjamundu Nermaiyundu Odu Raja starts off as a fun film which later gets into serious mode. With a bevy of artistes who are popular on social media, the movie has a decent story and a not-so-bad screenplay. It has some interesting satire on the current political happenings, too, though we have seen a few of them earlier in other films. But the lack of flow in the script limits the story’s potential to some extent not making it a wholesome entertainer.

Siva (Rio Raj) and Vicky (Vigneshkanth) run a successful YouTube channel. The two happy-go-lucky guys, however, are waiting for something big to happen in their lives. During one of their shows, they accidentally meet a veteran businessman who offers them huge money in return for three favours. How the duo take up the challenge of the impossible tasks assigned by the businessman forms the rest of the story.

The story as such looks good on paper – it also has a message towards the end. But the way things proceed appear staged as the emotional scenes become a little forced. Some of the scenes in which the average common man’s behaviour and attitude towards happenings in the society are portrayed, are enjoyable in parts. The chemistry between Rio and Vignesh is the prime positive aspect of the film, but the female lead character, essayed by Shirin Kanchwala, is underwritten, which makes the romantic track unnecessary and ineffective.

On the technical side, the visuals look inconsistent at few places. Shabir’s songs, (Nenjamundu Nermaiyundu Odu Raja remix version, and the Thuppuna Thodachikuven in particular) sound really good, but the background score is heavy on melodrama, especially, in the second half. Debutant Karthik Venugopal has delivered a commercial entertainer with a social message that are very similar to the concept videos of their YouTube channel Black Sheep. One of the best moments in the first half is the stretch where they give a lead to an imaginary song sequence, but it is abruptly cut to real-time. The understanding of audiences’ mindset has worked well.

Special mention to the climax sequence which might change your perspective of the whole film.
