Chennai, August 14th 2019: Seasonal diseases arise due to the change in the environmental conditions and particularly during monsoon season. It opens the door for diseases brought by bacteria and viruses. The chances of the spread of water-borne diseases increase due to change in temperature and polluted water. Frequent and thorough hand washing protects from most of the infectious diseases that spread during this season, said Dr Subramanian Swaminathan, Senior Consultant – Infectious Diseases. A session on the symptoms, causes, and diagnosis of the diseases was organized by Gleneagles Global Health City in Chennai.

Infectious diseases are disorders caused by the organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Many organisms live in and on our bodies and they are normally harmless but under certain conditions, some organisms may cause diseases said Dr Ashwin Karuppan V, Consultant – Internal Medicine & Diabetology. Disease-causing germs can also infect you through contaminated food and water. It allows germs to spread to many people through a single source, said Dr Suresh, Associate Consultant – Pulmonology

Speaking on the Complications of seasonal diseases Dr Perumal Karnan, Senior Consultant –Paediatrics, said most of the Infectious diseases have only minor complications but some infections such as pneumonia are life-threatening. Few diseases have been linked to long term complications that increase the risk of cancer. Speaking about Prevention, Dr Padmapriya Vivek, Head of Department – Obstetrics, and Gynaecology said, Drinking boiled water, avoiding outside food can prevent stomach infections to some extent. Vaccination can drastically reduce the chances of contracting many seasonal diseases.

Early diagnosis and seeking medical advice on time is the key to keep these diseases away. Seasonal diseases and infections are common not just in rural areas, but also in urban areas like Chennai said Dr Dhivyambigai G R, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
