Ajith and Shraddha Srinath starrer is one of the most socially relevant films to come out of Tamil film industry. Also, it mostly remains true to the story of its Hindi original. If the early trends are anything to go by, Ajith is set to score another big victory at the box office with Nerkonda Paarvai. The film is the official remake of Bollywood film Pink (2016), which was directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.
Nerkonda Paarvai also seemingly holds emotional value for everyone involved in the project. It was Sridevi’s wish to make a movie in Tamil with Ajith under her husband Boney Kapoor’s production. Even Ajith had promised Sridevi during English Vinglish, in which he played a cameo, that he would do a film with her husband.Tamil remake of hit Hindi movie Pink. H Vinoth has funded the movie, which is produced by Bollywood’s leading producer Boney Kapoor.
Nerkonda Paarvai story deals around three modern women who are falsely accused of a crime. It tries to expose regressed mindset of the people, who judge women based on their dress.Ajith’s character is introduced to us as a phantom-like presence, and the stark feel is amplified more with Meera’s tussle with the men. The courtroom drama, despite its liberal dose of histrionics and sermon-like moments, does an effective job at unraveling the central conceit of the film. The writing exposes the society’s judgemental gaze towards a woman, who did nothing but assert her agency. The dialogues are sharp and to the point, making it one if the highlights. Nerkonda Paaravai conveys a message by toning the preachiness down.
In terms of form, Nerkonda Paarvai is not very different from the original. The handheld aesthetic and reduced colour palette of the latter is contrasted by the stabilized cinematography and the vibrant tone of this film. The biggest challenge of placing a fight sequence in a remake like Pink to satisfy the mass image of Ajith is very well justified and done in style. People who had watched the original would still buy these mass scenes, as the major story is in a narrative pattern. The film lets Ajith, the star, to take a backseat and not yearn for the spotlight. As much as one can argue that he essays the same role of Amitabh Bachchan from Pink which the veteran nailed; what’s really important is that Ajith is a bigger star and he’s more relevant. Ajith plays Bharath Subramaniam, a famed lawyer who is now fighting his inner demons and mourning the loss of his wife. He’s dealing with depression and is suffering from bipolar. When he gets an opportunity to represent the girls as their lawyer, he sees it as a way to unleash himself from his past. Ajith couldn’t have played his part better and he’s majestic in the courtroom scenes.
Shraddha is equally praiseworthy as Ajith for being open to accept the role. If accepting such a role is a challenge, pulling off the character would’ve been even more challenging. Shraddha really makes us buy her helplessness with a matured performance that’s mostly believable and never feels too dramatic.Clapworthy moments galore.A razor sharp 2nd half with super hard-hitting dialogs.. Dir #HVinoth pulls off this remake with flying colors. A really sensitive subject, and he does the tightrope walk like a boss.
#Thala #Ajith’s best performance in recent times. He owns 2019
