The Indian Navy is a strong supporter of Yachting in India,
especially for the youth. This is done through encouraging Yachting under
the aegis of Indian Navy Sailing Association, which has 22 Indian Navy
Waterman Ship Training Centres spread over various Naval stations in the
country. At the national level, YAI promotes yachting at all levels from
grass root to professional level of yachting. Many clubs in the country
including the Royal Madras Yacht Club are registered with YAI.
RMYC’s association with the Navy goes prior to 1980’s when
Commodore Harold Claudius an Officer in the Indian Navy nurtured the club
and the sport of sailing at Chennai by encouraging student members to race.
In those days the fraternity was about 40 sailors and only 8
Boats. The old club house of RMYC was inaugurated by Chief of Naval Staff,
Admiral Tahiliani in 1987.
